What is the difference between a Digital still camera and a SLR?

When I say digital still camera, I mean ones that look very similar to the actual SLRs, such as the Nikon Coolpix P90. Obviously there is a price range, but I am wondering if there is any major difference between such cameras. Your help would be greatly appreciated, thanks

There is not one but several significant differences. First a SLR (Single Lens Reflex) gets its namesake from the mirror that sits between the lens and sensor (or film), which redirects light into the optical viewfinder. This means when you compose you're seeing light coming directly through the lens. Thus there is no lag or dimming that you often get with an LCD. The viewfinder on the P90, BTW, is just a tiny LCD.

Also a digital SLR's sensor is several times larger than the one in the P90 or most other digital compacts. The bigger sensor means these cameras can collect more light, and so, among other things, produce cleaner images in lower light situations (such as those indoors).

Then there is the fact that an SLR's lens is actually interchangeable; You may remove it and place another which is better suited to a particular task. On cameras like the P90 the lens is permanently fixed to the body... although this fixed lens can give you a greater zoom range than would be possible with any **single** SLR lens.

Finally SLRs tend to be much faster and more responsive. There is practically no lag between when you turn them on and when they're ready to be used. And they can autofocus very quickly.
