Swimming Pool Chemical Question .....HELP!!!!!!!!!!!?
My tester strips keep telling me I am low on shock, but I'm putting in 8 gals. in two weeks..the water is clear though, but it seems that mustard algae keeps coming back in small patches on the bottom and a little on the sides every few days. I also have put in required amts. of algaecide. But I killing my wallet on shock. Shouldn't it last longer and shouldn't the algaecide keep the algae from forming. I have a new pump and new sand in my filter. The pool is 4' x 24'. Why are the test strips telling me to use so much shock so often? I use Bacquicil products...
Your last sentence said it all. You can't use a copper based algaecide in there nor are you supposed to use chlorine. You bought into Bacquicil and you have to stick to their pricey products.
Mustard algae is a little tough to completely kill in even a chlorine pool. Those spores are getting in somehow or you're not killing them all at once. One of the two. If you have plants overhanging the pool or creeping over the edge, that can cause a mustard algae bloom. So can a high phosphate level. Used any fertilizer near the pool lately or had some lawn toys visit the pool after being used on a fertilized lawn? That'll do it too.
If phosphates are the reason, there's an enzyme called Phos Free that will work to reduce the levels but I'm not sure if it's compatible with Bacquicil or not. The one algaecide I know you can use that's not a bacquicil product but is compatible is any polyquat algaecide. It's expensive but is probably cheaper than Bacquicil's own brand which is essentially the same stuff.
One last thing. Those test strips are not the most accurate way of testing water. You should at least take a sample in to a pool store for a proper titration or buy a better test kit that tests at least pH, Cl/Br and TA. Titrations are just more accurate and those strips could have expired as well.
