Are there any laws or regulations about a homeowner painting a gas meter a color other than gray?

As we live in a desert environment, the standard gray gas meter sticks out like a sore thumb, and is very unattractive as it is located right at the front of our house as seen from the street. Are there any laws prohibiting our painting the gas meter a "sand" type of color?

paint that sucker! we had to paint them on the new houses to get passed but that was a weather/rust issue. we use gray because it matched. its also an industry standard color. as was said.. whats the worse they gonna say to you
